Fertility Preservation for Adolescents

For pediatric patients, fertility preservation through sperm cryopreservation can offer the possibility of building a family in the future in the unfortunate case that sperm production does not return to normal levels post-treatment/ surgery. Our process is designed to be simple, safe, and effective for patients of reproductive ages.

What is Cryopreservation?
Cryopreservation is the process of collecting and freezing sperm, using liquid nitrogen, to preserve its quality for future use. Sperm that is frozen prior to chemotherapy, radiation or surgical procedures that may affect sperm production in the future, can be stored indefinitely, without compromise, until the time is right to create a family.
Taking the step to cryopreserve sperm before undergoing cancer treatment is crucial for pediatric patients, regardless of whether they currently envision wanting a family in the future. This proactive choice helps preserve options, ensuring more possibilities are available when the time comes to make decisions about starting a family.

Sample Collection
A sperm sample is collected through self-masturbation into a sterile container provided in the kit. While this topic may feel awkward to discuss, it is an essential step in fertility preservation.

Storage & Use
All frozen samples are safely stored in our secure, vaulted cryobank. Access to the specimens is strictly limited to authorized personnel, ensuring their security and confidentiality.
For Patients Under 18, a parent or legal guardian must complete all necessary paperwork and handle payment for the storage account. Once the patient turns 18, they will assume full control of the account, including completing new paperwork and managing future payments.
The frozen specimens can only be used by the patient for reproductive purposes. If the samples are no longer needed, appropriate disposition forms must be completed. For patients under 18, this responsibility lies with the parent or legal guardian. Patients over 18 must manage this process themselves.
